“Is your insert going to be 2-panel, 4-panel, or 8-panel?”  “Do you want it to be booklet style or fold-out?” etc. etc.

In case you were confused as to what all this meant (and many of our first-time customers are), we thought we’d devote this entry to explain.  It’s simple really.  The term “panel” refers to each individual printed surface, side, or page.  So…

1-panel inserts have only the front cover artwork with a blank back.

2-panel inserts display artwork on both sides of the insert.

4-panel inserts have 4 printed sides and will open up like a wallet.

6-panel inserts have 6 printed sides and will open up like a tri-fold wallet.

8 page bookles have 8 printed sides and will open up like a booklet.  8 Page booklets  require two distinct sheets of paper, they will come stapled together.

8-panel fold-out inserts have 8 printed sides that fold-out and consist of one long sheet of paper requiring no staples.

You can go as simple or elaborate as you see fit for your particular CD Replication project.  Just remember that “panel” refers to each printed page or artwork of your insert.  Your insert can be a single sheet, a booklet, or even a foldout – just be sure to specify exactly what you want when you speak with our service representative, and we’ll make sure it gets done.

We were reminded of this when we met local musician, DJ Insomniac, who came in with a request for a short-run duplication job for his new compilation album “The Winter of Insomnia.”  Typically, clients needing CD DVD duplication in smaller quantities require only basic packaging to keep costs low, but we were surprised and more than just a little impressed when he placed his order for 100 CDs packaged in high gloss, UV coated, photo finish DigiPaks.  While his CD artwork was in black and white, he refused the less expensive monotone printing and opted for our most expensive premium printing alternative to give his CD artwork a more vivid and eye-catching look.

When producing a CD product for the market, you want to be sure that it looks its best to reflect your professionalism and the utmost quality of your product. When you are creating you color designs for printing, you ought to know that every computer monitor is color-calibrated differently. For instance, a light-green image on your computer monitor, when printed, may actually appear several shades lighter or darker or even tinted with different, unwanted colors.

Part of the reason for this is due to a discrepancy in color models. While your television screens and computer monitors function in RGB (Red-Green-Blue) mode, the printing world operates in CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Key/Black).

What’s the difference?

RGB functions as additive colors. When combining red, green and blue lights you get white light. While RGB is ideal for producing colors with light on your computer monitors, colors printed on your designed inserts require a different approach.

This is where CMYK comes in. This color model utilizes Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black pigments that mix together in predetermined proportions to produce color on printed material.

All PDF or Digital Proofs that you view on a computer monitor will fall short in reproducing the exact colors you see on your computer screen. While a Digital Proof is indeed useful in assessing for font consistency, typos, image placement, and approximate color consistency, it should not be solely relied upon to proof color. You are welcome to bring in your own match print for the purpose of color matching.

Whenever color accuracy is a priority in your printing order, be sure to purchase a Hard Proof copy. We offer this service in CD Replication orders of 500+ quantities.

The Hard Proof (sometimes called a proof print or match print) is a printed copy of what your design will look like once duplicated. It gives you the most accurate preview of the end product, and therefore ensures you the highest quality.

Mini CD / DVD

Mini CDs / DVDs playback just like standard discs. Mini CD/DVD discs are smaller in size and store less than standard size discs. Mini CDs store 185MB and mini DVDs store 1.1GB. Both discs are approximately 3" (8cm) in diameter.

Business Card CD / DVD

Business card CDs / DVDs come in two different shapes, hockey rink and rectangle. Business card CDs store 60MB while business card DVDs store 360MB.

Custom Shaped CD / DVD

Custom shaped CDs / DVDs are probably the most effective marketing tool. Shaped discs can be cut in any shape as long as the discs is geometrically balanced. Popular shapes for shaped CD / DVD replication include clam shell, house, guitar pick, star, stop sign, heart, and puzzle piece. The storage capacity for shaped discs will depend on the shape that the discs are cut to. For example, a stop sign cut CD will hold 120MB (720MB for DVD), a heard shaped CD will hold 40MB (240MB for DVD).

Flex DVD

FLEX DVDs have the same storage capacity of standard size DVD-5 discs (4.7GB). The major difference between FLEX DVDs are that they are "bendable". FLEX DVDs are much thinner than a standard size discs, making these discs lighter in weight. Why would you want a thinner, lighter weight DVD? Direct mailing. The lighter weight of these discs will save you money in shipping/postage. FLEX DVDs are also less suscetible to damage during shipping since these discs will bend without breaking.

Dual Disc (Hybrid Disc)

Dual discs are double sided discs with one side CD and the other side DVD. Dual Discs allow artists to create in exciting new ways, using audio, video, and computer content – all in one double sided disc.

Silkscreen Printing for CD DVD Replication

In silkscreen printing, film is made from the supplied artwork. A special emulsion is applied to the screen. The screen is then covered by the prepared film and exposed to UV light. The parts of the screen covered by the film are not exposed to the UV light and are washed out with water. The other areas are exposed to the UV and harden. This screen is then placed on top of the CD/DVD and ink is pushed through using a squeegee.

Silkscreen printing is best for jobs that require solid colors with no complex gradients. Silkscreen is especially great for jobs that require use of PMS colors.

Offset Printing for CD DVD Replication

For artwork that has photos or large variations in color tone, offset printing is your best option.
